Should the South be granted amnesty?

I don't believe the South should have been granted amnesty because they were doing what they thought was okay. In the South, everyone grew up just knowing about slaves and thinking that's how it always had been and that's how it always will be. I also think they didn't need to be granted amnesty because breaking away from the Union was something they wanted and thought was right if the North and South could not get along. I feel like in trying to grant the South amnesty, they were trying to cause the South to feel bad about their actions and condone them. The South were just doing what they believed was fine and I'm sure if people were starting wars with me, I'd want to break away and if they tried to forgive me, I wouldn't accept it. Slavery was wrong and inhumane, but the South didn't think it was wrong since they all the people grew up with it.
